During the COVID pandemic, Bobby Dyer was able to re-open our beaches to help our economy moving forward, has helped bring new technology-based jobs to our city and helped more opportunities for housing that is affordable to our military service members.

MEET VIRGINIA BEACH MAYOR BOBBY DYER
Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer served his country as a United States Marine until
1972. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Louis University, a Master’s Degree in
Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickenson University, and a Ph.D. in Organizational
Leadership from Regent University.
Mayor Dyer’s public office career began when he was elected in 2004 to represent the
Centerville district, much of which is included in the current Virginia Senate District 22.
Dyer was re-elected to the Centerville district in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
Dyer declared himself a candidate for Mayor in 2018 and was elected to a two-year
term in November of that year. Mayor Dyer was re-elected by large margins in 2020
and 2024.
Mayor Dyer is the first Veteran and the first Ph.D. to be elected Mayor of Virginia Beach.
Mayor Dyer has led Virginia Beach through its toughest times and tragedies and has
kept Virginia Beach strong with powerful economic growth, strong law enforcement and
low taxes. Some of his accomplishments are:
Keeping Virginia Beach real estate taxes the lowest of any city in Hampton Roads.
Keeping restaurant meals taxes the lowest of any city in Hampton Roads.
Ending the beach shutdown imposed on us, Mayor Dyer negotiated with a democratic
Governor to fully reopen our oceanfront in May, 2020. Dyer helped businesses stay
open and keep the Virginia Beach economy strong with regulatory relief and suspended
restaurant meals taxes.
Mayor Dyer made attainable housing one of the top priorities of the city with the
partnership of City Council.
Mayor Dyer implemented a step pay plan for first responders, public safety
professionals and most city staff to combat pay compression that hurt morale,
recruitment and retention.
Mayor Dyer helped pass and implement the bond referendum to upgrade and revitalize
the city’s stormwater and flood mitigation systems, investing hundreds of millions of
dollars to prevent flooding.
Mayor Dyer fully funded school board funding requests every year as Mayor.
Mayor Dyer made Virginia Beach police officers among the highest paid in the region.
Mayor Dyer served as Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor with Regent University
School of Government, as well as an Assistant Professor with Hampton University, an
Instructor at Old Dominion University and an Adjunct Professor at South University.
Mayor Bobby Dyer is former home care physical therapist and also served on the New
Jersey State Board of Physical Therapist and worked in various roles in numerous hospitals
and medical centers prior to moving to Virginia.
Mayor Dyer was recognized as one of the top Mayors in the United States by Newsmax
and was one of the first Mayors to oppose defunding police. Virginia Beach is among the
safest large cities in America.
Bobby and his wife, Trish, live in the Lake Christopher section of the Centerville District
in Virginia Beach and have two children and five grandchildren.
